Due to a retirement, we have a rare career opportunity for a Water/Wastewater Superintendent who is MDH-MPC-certified with both Class “B” Water and Wastewater Operator licenses, a Type IV Waste Disposal Facility operator license, and a valid MN Class A CDL with a Tank Endorsement who has a minimum of 3- 5 years’ experience with leadership responsibilities preferred.  Also required is the ability to plan and lead significant infrastructure upgrades including an anticipated major plant rehabilitation.  Our drinking water usage averages 260,000 gallons each day and our wastewater facility is designed to treat 990,000 gallons per day for a population of 1300 residents.  Full job description available here:

Position Objectives

The City of Grand Marais is seeking a Water/Wastewater Superintendent.  The Water/Wastewater Superintendent for the City of Grand Marais plans, directs and supervises the work of a team engaged in the maintenance, repair, and construction of the Water and Wastewater systems in order to ensure uninterrupted service and safe drinking water for the public.  The Water Superintendent oversees the efficiency of operations in order to provide service at the lowest possible cost to utility customers.

Additionally, the Water Superintendent monitors and reports required testing that ensures water quality and conformance to safety and environmental regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Set staff goals, plan and prioritize daily work and schedule staff.
  2. Create a seasonal schedule for preventative maintenance of all water systems including potable and wastewater treatment facilities, water distribution and wastewater collection systems, and accompanying infrastructure including pumps, lift stations, manholes, hydrants, etc.
  3. Perform required maintenance and secure contract services when needed. 
  4. Develop, recommend, and administer policies, practices, procedures and records for the operations and maintenance of water systems.
  5. Direct all laboratory functions. Prepare or oversee the preparation of all tests and reports required by various regulatory agencies for water systems.
  6. Oversee the efficient operation, collection and removal of bio-solids from wastewater.
  7. Manage special projects and assist other city departments with work projects to enhance the safety and efficiency of city operations.
  8. Maintain compliance with all applicable regulations and codes.  Oversee record creation and ensure accurate and timely reporting to various agencies at the federal, state, and local levels.
  9. Provide input for the annual operating and capital improvement planning budget for the water/wastewater treatment facilities to include staffing, facility, and service delivery needs.
